The Force Awakens (Star Wars)

The Force Awakens (2015, J.J. Abrams)

What IMDB says:

Three decades after the defeat of the Galactic Empire, a new threat arises. The First Order attempts to rule the galaxy and only a ragtag group of heroes can stop them, along with the help of the Resistance.

What I say:

So good! Honestly, I think this is the best Star Wars movie. It is very funny, introduced new characters that were likeable, (no Jarjar binks’), and the visuals are stunning.

The movie takes place in the future, (duh!), Luke has disappeared, (typical Luke move), and everyone is searching for him, especially the leader of the First Order, Kylo Ren, who is Leia and Hans’ son! Luke is the last of the Jedi’s and once he is killed then the Jedi’s will be finally destroyed. Finally.

The best part of this movie, to me, is the relationship between Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Finn (John Boyega). Rey is an awesome character. She is exactly what the Star Wars franchise needed. Leia was strong and independent, but in the end she always needed to be saved by a man. Rey, she does not need a man.

Adam Driver, who plays Kylo Ren, is fantastic! He was great in Girls. He played the conflicted, yet sweet boyfriend of Hanna (Lena Dunham).

The star of the show has got to be BB-8. He is adorable, and never actually says a word! I understand why everyone wants one!

I really like how The Force Awakens was able to incorporate the old and the new. Rey and Finn steal a ship to escape the First Order ships looking for BB-8, the ship they steal is the Millenium Falcon, Hans Solo’s ship.  They go to a watering hole ran by a friend of Hans, who has Luke’s lightsaber, which calls to Rey.  Kylo Ren finds out that they are there and he bombs the shit out of everything.  He takes Rey in hopes of reading her mind so that he can find out where Luke ran away to.  She figures out that she is strong with the force and is able to escape.  Her #squadgoals shows up to help.  She ends up having to fight Kylo Ren, while the resistance tries to destroy the new darkside weapon.  The weapon, in typical Empire style, is taking forever to charge up.  Do they really want to win?

Rey is holding her own against Kylo Ren, like the badass she is.  He offers to teach her the ways of the force, which she is pretty good at using already.  She kicks his ass.  You go gurl, *snapping in a Z formation.

Two things: I think Kylo Ren is wayyyyy more evil than Vader.  Anakin was a jealous and angry teenager.  He turned to the darkside fully because Padme dies.  Kylo Ren, he is just evil.  I am sure he went through am angsty teen period as well, but he turned to the darkside earlier.  Also, Vader saves his son Luke, while Kylo totally murders his father, Hans.  Yes, Hans Solo dies.  Chewy loses it and kills a bunch of stormtroopers.  He later leaves with Rey to find Luke.  I like that team!

The other thing, I think Rey is Luke’s daughter.  Maybe I am wrong, but her connection to the #squadgoals can not be denied, also Luke’s lightsaber called to her.  She has to be in that family somehow.  During the whole movie it seems that they want you to believe that she is Leia and Hans’ kid, but I don’t think so.  Why would they leave her on Jakku?

In the end Rey finds Luke, who is looking like a first year philosophy teacher who tries to bang his students.  The film ends with her holding out his lightsaber, which he just stares at.

I am sooooo excited for the next movie.  Honestly, this movie is my all-time favourite Star Wars.  I am so happy about how they did it.  Like I said, they were able to combine old stuff with new in a way that was not cheesy, but pulled on the old sentimental heart strings.

The Force Awakens gets 10 dead Hans Solos out of a possible 5!  I know, that is not possible, but this is my dang rating system and I can do whatever I want!  Also, #savage.
